How to fly Wizz Air with the right bag

Wizz Air gives every fare, Basic included, one free bag of 40 x 30 x 20 cm at up to 10 kg, carried under the seat in front. That weight limit is unusually generous for a free bag, which means the thing that stops you is almost always the size.

Measure it packed. Wizz Air's conditions of carriage state that the dimensions include side pockets and allow no more than 5 cm extra for wheels, so a soft bag that measures fine empty can fail once it is full and bulging.

A few items travel free on top of that bag: a coat or blanket, your phone, reading material for the flight, and anything you buy airside after security. Infants add food for the flight and a foldable stroller or small crib, and one pushchair per child is checked free.

A neck pillow is not one of them. It has to fit inside the bag.

The 55 x 40 x 23 cm overhead trolley, also 10 kg, cannot be bought on its own. It comes inside WIZZ Priority, which bundles three separate things: the trolley, priority boarding, and a priority check-in desk.

Wizz Air prices it at €10 to €60 online or through its call centre, and €65 to €75 at the airport, per passenger and per one-way flight. A return is two purchases. Wizz Air's own fee data puts the online floor lower still at zero, which is presumably promotional or membership-discounted, while its consumer page says €10. Neither is what most people pay.

One line on Wizz Air's own page is worth reading twice: WIZZ Priority gives no priority at security control. That is a separate paid product called Security Fast Track. Priority means the boarding queue and the bag desk, nothing else.

It is non-refundable unless you cancel the whole booking, which itself carries a cancellation fee.

Wizz Air sells hold bags at 10, 20, 26 and 32 kg, each capped at 149 x 119 x 171 cm. Only one 10 kg bag is allowed per passenger; the heavier tiers are not capped that way.

Prices are bands, not numbers, and they split by season. Bought online, the 10 kg tier starts at €15 in low season and €20 in high season. The 20 kg tier starts at €20 and €25, the 26 kg tier at €26 and €31, the 32 kg tier at €32 and €37. The top of every band runs past €100, and past €130 on the heaviest tier.

Wizz Air publishes its own peak windows for 2026: Easter from 21 March to 20 April, summer from 12 June to 30 September, and Christmas from 15 December to 10 January 2027.

So a Burgas or Varna flight in August sits structurally in the expensive band, and no amount of shopping around inside Wizz Air will move it.

This is the most expensive misreading available on Wizz Air, because the bundle names suggest a ladder and the contents do not form one.

Basic is the fare plus the free under-seat bag. SMART adds the 55 x 40 x 23 cm trolley, priority boarding, priority check-in and seat selection, and includes no hold bag. Go adds a 20 kg hold bag, seat selection and free check-in at the airport as well as online, and includes no trolley and no Priority. Plus is the only bundle with both, pairing the trolley with a 32 kg hold bag, a premium seat and WIZZ Flex.

So a cabin-only traveller who buys Go pays for a suitcase they will not check and still boards with nothing but the under-seat bag.

If you want the trolley and nothing else, SMART is the bundle that matches. If you want a suitcase and nothing else, Go is correct.

Wizz Air publishes no bundle prices anywhere, so the honest method is a threshold rather than a comparison. Work out what the same contents cost bought separately, then check the uplift the booking flow quotes you against it.

At Wizz Air's published floor prices, per one-way flight, SMART is worth about €14 of components: Priority at €10 and a seat at €4. Go is worth about €24 in low season, being a 20 kg bag at €20 plus that seat, and about €29 in high season. Plus is worth about €56, adding a 32 kg bag at €32 and WIZZ Flex at €10.

Double each for a return. If the uplift the booking flow shows is below the threshold, the bundle wins.

Those are floor prices, and real quotes usually sit well above them. In practice a bundle normally beats buying the parts for anyone who needed the parts.

Wizz Air's own bundles page carries a warning most readers skip: the published description is for information only and does not constitute an offer, and the precise composition of your bundle is whatever the booking process shows.

That is not boilerplate. Wizz Air's live bundle configuration returns five separate variant codes whose contents do not all match the published page, which means the airline is running bundle variants and you may be shown a different one from the guide you just read.

The practical rule is simple. Read the bundle contents on the screen where you pay, not on the marketing page and not here. Look for the trolley specifically, because that is the item the variants differ on and the one most people assume is included.

If the payment screen does not list the 55 x 40 x 23 cm bag, you are not buying it, whatever the bundle is called.

Buy at booking anyway, but understand that the reason here is different from Ryanair's.

Ryanair prints two columns, one price at booking and a higher one afterwards, so waiting has a published cost. Wizz Air's schedule splits only by where you buy, online or call centre against the airport, and by season. There is no row at all for adding a bag after booking.

So on Wizz Air, waiting does not trigger a fixed surcharge. It exposes you to dynamic drift of unknown size, on a price that the airline says depends on the travel date, where you bought and the weight of the bag. Wizz Air's own booking flow nudges you with a line saying it is cheaper to add bags now, which is a claim about direction rather than a published tier.

Decide the bag in the same session as the fare. The saving is real but it cannot be quantified in advance.

Every punitive figure on Wizz Air lives at the airport, and all of them are per passenger, per one-way flight.

A hold bag bought at the airport is €70 to €80, against €20 to €25 at the published online floor, so roughly triple. An unpaid or oversized cabin bag at the airport or the gate is €55 to €65, and Wizz Air's conditions of carriage let it put the bag in the hold anyway, so you pay the fee and lose the bag for the flight. WIZZ Priority bought at the airport is €65 to €75.

Going over the tier you bought is charged by the kilogram, not as a flat penalty: €13 to €15 per kilo, per item, per flight. A 20 kg bag that weighs 25 kg can cost more in excess than the bag cost.

Airport check-in is a further €40 to €50 unless your bundle covers it. Go and Plus do. SMART does not.

This is the largest lever available to a Sofia or Bucharest traveller who flies Wizz Air more than once a year, and it belongs in a baggage guide because it cuts the bag price too.

Wizz Air's own page states €10 off fares from €29.99 and €5 off a checked bag or a Priority purchase made online, with the bag discount valid on the 20, 26 and 32 kg tiers. Both discounts apply per one-way flight, and they extend to the member plus one companion on the same booking.

Standard membership is €39.99 a year in Wizz Air's own live fee data, though several 2025 and 2026 guides report €59.99 after a reported increase, so check the price on the day rather than trusting either figure.

Two people on one return trip with a bag each is four discounted fare segments and four discounted bags: roughly €60 back on a single trip.

A few hard rules are worth knowing before you shop, because no amount of paying gets around them.

No single piece may exceed 32 kg. Wizz Air's conditions of carriage say carriage will be refused above it, so a heavy case has to be split rather than surcharged. The maximum size for any hold bag is 149 x 119 x 171 cm.

You may check up to six bags per passenger, but only the first three can be paid for online. The rest are paid at the airport, at airport rates, which is the most expensive way to carry anything on this airline.

And at a handful of airports, including Paris Beauvais, Cologne, Milan Malpensa and Pisa, baggage fees can only be paid by card, not cash. None of those are Bulgarian or Romanian airports, but several are the far end of routes flown from Sofia.
