7 Wizz Air bag mistakes (and how to avoid them)

The most expensive Wizz Air bag mistake is buying the bag at the airport: €70 to €80 for a checked bag against a published online floor of €20 to €25, per passenger, per bag, per one-way flight. Everything else on this list is smaller, and most of it comes from one thing, which is that the bundle names describe the price tier rather than the bag you get.
1. Buying WIZZ Go for a cabin trolley
- Cost
- €10 to €60 per person per one-way flight for WIZZ Priority, which is what you still have to buy afterwards to get the trolley.
- Why it happens
- Go sits in the middle of the bundle list, so it reads like the balanced option that covers hand luggage. It carries a 20 kg checked bag and seat selection, and Wizz Air's own page confirms it carries no trolley and no Priority. A cabin-only traveller who buys Go pays for a hold bag they will not use and still boards with the free under-seat bag.
- What to do
- Match the bundle to the bag. SMART is the cabin-only product: the under-seat bag, the 55 x 40 x 23 cm trolley, priority boarding and check-in, and a seat. Go is the hold bag product. Plus is the only one that carries both. Read the contents on the payment screen, which Wizz Air says is the authoritative version.
2. Expecting WIZZ Priority to move you through security
- Cost
- €10 to €60 per person per one-way flight for a product that buys the trolley, boarding and bag drop, and nothing at the security lane.
- Why it happens
- The word priority covers three things on Wizz Air and security is not one of them. The airline states on its own page that WIZZ Priority gives no priority at security control, which is sold separately as Security Fast Track. The three things it does bundle cannot be bought apart, so a passenger who wants a bigger cabin bag also pays for boarding order.
- What to do
- Buy Priority when you need the 55 x 40 x 23 cm trolley in the cabin. If the July queue at Sofia is the problem you are solving, that is a different product. And if the trip fits the free 40 x 30 x 20 cm bag, you need neither, which is the only outcome that costs nothing.
3. Packing the free bag to the size and forgetting the weight
- Cost
- €55 to €65 at the airport or gate for a cabin bag that breaks the rule, and the bag then travels in the hold in any case.
- Why it happens
- Wizz Air is unusually generous on the free bag, allowing 10 kg under the seat where Ryanair publishes no weight limit at all. That generosity makes the weight easy to forget, and the size is stricter than it looks: the conditions of carriage state the dimensions include side pockets, with only 5 cm allowed for wheels.
- What to do
- Weigh the bag packed and measure it packed, pockets and all. If it is close, move the contents of the outer pockets into the main compartment. Wizz Air also carries a coat, your phone, reading material for the flight and airside purchases on top of the bag, so those do not have to go inside it.
4. Buying a checked tier one size too small
- Cost
- €13 to €15 per kilogram of excess, charged per item per one-way flight. A 20 kg bag weighing 25 kg can cost more in excess than the bag did.
- Why it happens
- Wizz Air sells checked bags at 10, 20, 26 and 32 kg, and the price steps between them are small: the published low-season floors run €20, €26 and €32. The excess charge does not work that way. It is billed by the kilo at the airport, where you have no way to shed weight except to open the case on the floor.
- What to do
- Buy the tier above your honest estimate whenever the gap between tiers is a few euro. Weigh the packed bag at home, not at the airport, and remember the return leg carries whatever you bought there. The 10 kg tier is capped at one bag per passenger, so a second bag has to come from a higher tier anyway.
5. Booking into a high season window without noticing
- Cost
- Wizz Air prices low and high season about €5 apart per checked bag tier, per passenger, per one-way flight.
- Why it happens
- Wizz Air publishes its expensive windows rather than hiding them in the quote: Mar 21 to Apr 20, 2026 for Easter, Jun 12 to Sep 30, 2026 for summer, and Dec 15, 2026 to Jan 10, 2027 for Christmas. A Burgas or Varna trip in August therefore sits structurally in the higher band, and so does most of the window a family with school-age children can travel in.
- What to do
- Check the dates against those windows before you cost the bags, and if the trip is flexible, compare a date just outside one. The difference is small on a single bag and adds up for four people on a return, where the same €5 becomes €40 across the booking.
6. Leaving the bag decision to the airport
- Cost
- €70 to €80 for a checked bag at the airport, €55 to €65 for a cabin bag, and €40 to €50 for airport check-in on a Basic fare.
- Why it happens
- Wizz Air publishes no separate price for adding a bag after booking, only for buying it at the airport, so the real penalty is concentrated in that last step. Prices online drift upward instead, which makes waiting feel harmless right until the airport rate applies. WIZZ Go and WIZZ Plus include airport check-in, and SMART does not.
- What to do
- Buy at booking as the default, and if you have to add something later, do it online from the app or the Wizz Air account rather than at the desk. Treat the airport as the most expensive place to buy anything, because on this airline it is the only place with a published premium.
7. Dismissing WIZZ Discount Club without doing the arithmetic
- Cost
- Standard membership is €39.99 to €59.99 a year and takes €10 off each fare segment on fares from €29.99, plus €5 off each 20, 26 or 32 kg bag bought online.
- Why it happens
- A yearly fee looks like another subscription, so most people never price it. For a Sofia or Bucharest traveller the numbers are unusually favourable because it discounts bags as well as fares, which no other membership on these routes does. Two people on one return trip with a bag each is four fare segments and four bag segments.
- What to do
- Run it over your real year. Two people, one return, one bag each is about €60 of discount on a single trip, which covers the membership. It is worth less if you only ever fly the cheapest promotional fares, since the fare discount does not apply below €29.99, and worth nothing if you never check a bag.
Questions
Are the bundle contents guaranteed?
Not from the marketing page. Wizz Air states that the published description is informational and that the booking process is authoritative, and its live configuration runs several bundle variants whose contents do not all match that page. Check the payment screen before you pay.
Can I cancel WIZZ Priority if my plans change?
Not on its own. Priority is non-refundable unless you cancel the whole booking, and that cancellation itself costs €33 to €132 per passenger per flight. Treat the purchase as final once it is made.
Does Priority guarantee my trolley stays in the cabin?
It guarantees you may bring it. Wizz Air's conditions of carriage let it place even a fully compliant trolley in the hold free of charge for operational or safety reasons, so keep documents, medication and valuables out of that bag.
How many checked bags can one passenger take?
Up to six, but only the first three can be paid for online. The rest are paid at the airport at airport rates. The 10 kg tier is the exception: one per passenger, with no separate airport price published for it.
