7 cabin bag mistakes (and how to avoid them)

The costliest cabin bag mistake is arriving at the gate with a bag that does not fit the sizer: €70 to €75 on Ryanair, €55 to €65 on Wizz Air, charged per bag and per one-way flight. On a €36 fare from Sofia that is the trip doubling in price while you stand in the queue. The other six below are cheaper, and every one of them is decided before you leave home.
1. Buying a bag sized to an old 40 x 20 x 25 cm listing
- Cost
- €70 to €75 at a Ryanair gate or €55 to €65 at a Wizz Air one, per bag and per one-way flight, if the bag turns out to be over.
- Why it happens
- Ryanair enlarged its free under-seat bag during 2025, from 40 x 20 x 25 cm to 40 x 30 x 20 cm, about 20% more volume. Retail listings, luggage makers and older guides still carry the smaller figure, and nobody is obliged to update them. A bag sold as airline approved is being described against somebody else's reading of a rule that has since moved.
- What to do
- Measure against 40 x 30 x 20 cm, which is the current free size on both Ryanair and Wizz Air, and treat the label on the bag as marketing rather than a specification. If you already own a bag cut to the old size, it still fits comfortably. The problem only runs the other way, when a bag was bought to a bigger number.
2. Counting a handbag and a laptop bag as one allowance
- Cost
- €12.49 to €36 per person per one-way flight on Ryanair for Priority and 2 Cabin Bags, which is the only way to carry a genuine second piece.
- Why it happens
- Ryanair describes the free allowance as one small personal bag, such as a handbag or a laptop bag. The word people read is the example, not the word one. Two pieces slung over a shoulder look like one item on the way through the terminal and stop looking like one at the gate, where they are counted rather than described.
- What to do
- Put the small bag inside the larger one before you get to the gate, so the two travel as one item. If they will not combine, buy the second piece at booking rather than discovering the problem at the aircraft steps. On Wizz Air the free extras are a coat, a phone and your reading material for the flight, not a second bag.
3. Measuring the bag empty rather than packed
- Cost
- No separate fee for measuring it wrong, but the gate charge that follows is €55 to €65 on Wizz Air, and the bag goes into the hold anyway.
- Why it happens
- A soft bag that measures 40 x 30 x 20 cm on the floor of your flat can measure more once the side pockets are full. Wizz Air's conditions of carriage state that the dimensions include side pockets, and allow only 5 cm for wheels. The Ryanair sizer is a rigid frame and the bag is expected to drop into it without being pushed.
- What to do
- Pack the bag completely, then test it: into a sizer if there is one in the hall, or against a tape measure at home the night before. If it is tight, move the contents of the outer pockets into the main compartment. That single change is usually worth the two centimetres that decide the question.
4. Adding the cabin bag after the booking is closed
- Cost
- Ryanair sells Priority and 2 Cabin Bags at €12.49 to €36 during the booking and €19.99 to €45.50 afterwards, per person per one-way flight.
- Why it happens
- Ryanair publishes two price columns, one for the time of booking and one for everything after it, so the penalty for deciding later is a published price structure rather than folklore. At the floor of the band, waiting costs more than half again. Wizz Air publishes no separate later tier at all, so there the cost of waiting is drift you cannot size in advance.
- What to do
- Decide the bag question in the same session as the fare. If you are unsure whether you need the trolley, price both versions of the trip before paying, because the decision gets more expensive the moment the booking closes and it cannot be reversed: Ryanair does not refund a purchased bag or let you remove it.
5. Assuming the cabin trolley will still be on sale later
- Cost
- The fallback is a 10 kg Ryanair check-in bag at €10.49 to €44.99 at booking, which is dropped at the desk rather than carried on.
- Why it happens
- Priority and 2 Cabin Bags is capped per flight and sells out. Ryanair publishes a help article that tells sold-out passengers their only option is a 10 kg check-in bag instead, so a trip planned around carrying everything on ends in the bag-drop queue. The cap is not published as a number, which is what makes it hard to plan around.
- What to do
- Buy the trolley with the fare on any flight where you know you need it. On Wizz Air the equivalent product is WIZZ Priority, and the SMART bundle wraps it with a seat, so price the bundle against the parts. If priority has already gone, add the hold bag online rather than turning up and hoping.
6. Paying for priority to move faster through security
- Cost
- €10 to €60 per person per one-way flight for WIZZ Priority online, which buys boarding and check-in but nothing at the security lane.
- Why it happens
- The name does most of the damage here. Wizz Air states on its own page that WIZZ Priority gives no priority at security control, which is sold separately as Security Fast Track. What Priority does buy is the 55 x 40 x 23 cm trolley in the cabin, boarding ahead of the main group, and a dedicated bag-drop desk.
- What to do
- Buy priority for the bag, not for the queue. If the security line at Sofia in July is the thing you want to solve, that is a different product with a different price. And if you were buying priority only to be sure of locker space, check whether the free under-seat bag covers the trip instead.
7. Planning your budget on the advertised bag price
- Cost
- Ryanair's advertised cabin bag price was available on 0.3% of the flights in a sample of more than 1,500 prices, and Wizz Air's on 0.6%.
- Why it happens
- Both airlines price bags dynamically, and both say so. Ryanair's fee table repeats on every baggage row that the fee varies with the route and the dates; Wizz Air publishes separate low and high season bands. The advertised floor is the bottom of a real range rather than a typical price, so a trip costed at that number is costed at the best case.
- What to do
- Budget above the floor. For a Ryanair trolley, plan around €20, which is a travel-press midpoint rather than a Ryanair figure. For a Wizz Air 20 kg bag, plan at least €25, which is Wizz Air's own published high-season minimum, and note that the band runs all the way to €122. If the real quote comes in lower, the trip is cheaper than planned, which is the direction you want the surprise to run.
Questions
Is the free under-seat bag the same size on both airlines?
Yes. Ryanair and Wizz Air both carry a 40 x 30 x 20 cm bag under the seat on every fare. Wizz Air adds a 10 kg weight cap and counts side pockets; Ryanair publishes no weight limit and does not weigh it. Both sit above the 40 x 30 x 15 cm industry minimum.
Can I buy just the cabin trolley on Ryanair?
No. The 10 kg overhead bag exists only inside Priority and 2 Cabin Bags, which also covers priority boarding and the small personal item. There is no standalone cabin bag line to buy, which is why readers hunting for one cannot find it.
Is a cabin bag always cheaper than a hold bag?
Not on Ryanair. At booking, Priority and 2 Cabin Bags runs €12.49 to €36 and the 10 kg checked bag runs €10.49 to €44.99, so the bands overlap and either can win on a given flight. The hold bag also takes the gate sizer out of the trip.
Do these fees apply to each direction?
Yes. Every cabin bag fee on both airlines is charged per passenger, per one-way flight. Wizz Air's own fee data marks the charging method per flight per passenger, and Ryanair's Bulgarian fee table annotates the rows the same way. A return trip pays twice.
